Uechi Ryu Karate in Lexington, MA

Skill over strength

Uechi Ryu is built on speed and technique rather than size, which is why a five-year-old and a fifty-year-old both get something out of the same hour.

Our mission

Why we train

Uechi Ryu is a traditional Okinawan karate built around speed, technique and structure rather than raw strength. That is the whole reason this school works for the people it works for. A small child, a teenager, and an adult who has never done anything like this are all learning the same thing, and none of them is at a disadvantage for being the smallest person in the room. Classes run six days a week, full time, for kids, teens and adults at every level. Every session has the same four parts: katas, partner drills, technique work, and equipment. You are never just doing cardio with a martial arts label on it. For children the training builds confidence, focus and the social side of being in a group that expects something of them. For adults it is fitness, self-defense and an hour where you cannot think about work. There is a fitness room too, open to students from thirteen up.

Why train here

Why train with us

01

Size is not the point

Uechi Ryu is built on speed and technique over strength, which makes it one of the few arts where a smaller person is not simply outmatched from the start.

02

A full hour before you commit

The orientation is a proper one-to-one session, not a sales pitch and not a trial class squeezed into the end of someone else's lesson.

03

There is a gym attached

Students from thirteen up can use the fitness room during school hours. You are not paying for a martial arts membership and a gym membership separately.
